Pamukkale is also a historical site called Hierapolis, founded in the 2nd century BC by the King of Pergamum, Eumenes. During the Roman era, it was attributed with healing properties thanks to its natural hot springs. It features a large necropolis, Roman baths, temples, and a theater (15,000 seats and very well-preserved – one of the finest Greco-Roman theaters). You can also see churches built during the Byzantine period in Pamukkale.
The astonishing geological formation of Pamukkale originates from the numerous hot springs in the area (it’s a volcanic region). Water infiltrates the limestone rocks, becoming enriched with minerals and CO2. Through various chemical reactions, calcium carbonate deposits on the rocks as it flows down the hill.
After evaporation, it forms a solid, white limestone layer. Several basins forming natural pools follow one another. Once filled by the springs, they overflow, creating petrified cascades with this same calcium carbonate.
This is called a travertine terrace. To give you an idea of the site’s size: it measures 2750 meters long and 155 meters high. From afar, Pamukkale resembles a glacier or a cotton castle (Pamukkale means “cotton castle” in Turkish). Since 1988, Pamukkale has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Therefore, stricter rules are in place for visitors to protect this fragile landscape as much as possible.
